The idea is really nice. The darkest shadows and brightest highlight are now also coloured. Is that as you intended?

Well, I can't say that the result was that carefully planned. I used the sample colorize plug in for this picture and I have a collection of images that I use with it. There are the ones here:
http://www.gimpguru.org/Tutorials/SampleToning/samples.shtml, but I also download other images for this purpose when I come across them. A good web site is: http://www.alternativephotography.com/artists/artists.html. For this picture I used a source image in my sample colorize folder that had a mood I thought I wanted and tried it. I liked the result so I kept it!

Thanks for those links!
I knew gradient mapping and to be honest, did not understand the use of the sample colorize plugin. Now I am fully aware of it and I will definitely play with it. It is much more powerful.
