Are polaroid frames cool?

Well, if the pictures are edited to also look like polaroid, then yes(IMHO)

I wouldn't use it for all photos -- looks too contrived for my tastes. However, for a special page of photos this might the right presentation. Especially if the photos were joiced up to mimic that 70s Polaroid palette!

Maybe extend the bottom border a bit to make it look more like the classic Polaroid-Land prints, and have the title/words for the photo rendered in the border?

Part of me would enjoy the cheesy application of Comic Sans or Marker Felt for the text!

Ah, it's not for 23 per se. We're talking about developing a sort of collage tool where you can order photos and text like on a bulleting board. And in doing so the polaroid approach has some merit. I was trying not to take the metaphor to far though which is why the borders are quite narrow and the bottom border is not even wider. Although that might fit into the scheme.

To test stuff out I might be creating a polaroid theme for myself.

One requirement for this however is that the polaroid effect should be CSS only, which is why the photos are not rotated along with the frame (annoying) and why I haven't applied any extra effects to the photos themselves. Any hints on how to actually achieve that "70s Polaroid palette"?

Yeah, i've been reading something about it a while ago(maybe here at 23). Let me check my bookmarks :)

Well, didn't have the bookmark any more. But I just googled something like how to make a photo look like a polaroid and alot of stuff came up.

But I'm very certain that at one point I commented some pictures that a 23 user had edited to look like polaroids, and the strange look that polaroids have(colours etc.)

Hmm.. I'm getting something handy now: http://www.shadowness.com/art/4094/Tutorials

But still not quite the perfect look, which I've seen.

That tutorial is neat -- makes images look like slightly faded polaroid emulsions.

I recall seeing photos still damp from the camera, and watching the colours come up was fascinating. I remember the hues being so bright and sharp when the emulsion process was finished. There was a picture of me as a child somewhere around Christmas, and my red sweater was so clear and bright fresh out of the camera.

Early polaroids were almost loke Velvia prints back in the day. At least this is how I remember it.
