✞ St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral is the first cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church to be constructed in North America. The New York architectural firm Steinman, Cain & White with Edward Utudjian of Paris as a consultant designed the cathedral. The cathedral's architectural plan is patterned after the 4th-century church of St. Hripsime in Armenia and includes two unique features distinct to Armenian architecture -- the use of double-intersecting arches and a pyramidal dome soaring 120 feet above street level. St. Vartan's was consecrated on April 28, 1968. The cathedral is named in honor of St. Vartan the 5th-century martyr who fought to preserve Armenian Christianity. † The Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola is a Roman Catholic parish administered by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). It was built between 1895 & 1900 to the designs of architect J. William Schickel of Schickel and Ditmars, and dedicated on December 11, 1898. The church is constructed of American, European & African marbles. The church was declared a New York City Landmark on March 4, 1969 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 24, 1980.

✍ The building which appears to be next to the church is actually across a very wide street from it. The close proximity is an optical illusion.

✎ Columbus Circle, named for Christopher Columbus, is a traffic circle where four streets meet and the point from which all official distances from New York City are measured. Completed in 1905 and renovated a century later, the circle was designed by William P. Eno – a businessman who pioneered many early innovations in road safety and traffic control. The monument at the center of Columbus Circle, created by Italian sculptor Gaetano Russo, consists of a marble statue of Columbus atop a 70ft. granite rostral column decorated with bronze reliefs representing Columbus' ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. Its pedestal features an angel holding a globe. The circle was renovated in 2005 when a fountain was added, along with benches and flower beds (though why anyone would want to sit in a circle surrounded by one of the most heavily trafficked intersections in NYC & inhale all those fumes, I can't imagine =P).
