I know, I know ... this is a protest shot. Well, despite wanting to move away from such images, I like this one. It conveys the content of the protest without featuring a mass of people. You know that whoever is holding that sign cares deeply about the issue at hand.

I made this image at a youth dance performance. It's programs like this, programs that give urban youth the opportunity to experience mastery, teamwork, and deeply caring adults, that epitomize social change for me. Or perhaps "social hope" is the more apt phrase. Dance programs don't change public policies (is public policy the only source of true social change?), they change lives.

I dragged the shutter in this shot to capture the dynamism of the performance and abstract away from their bodies a bit. Personally, I think the shot works despite the hot spots - though maybe I should tone down those drums a bit.

This is a picture of youth discussing diversity and environmental issues. They're participating in an "environmental field day" bringing together youth from all over Boston that are engaged in urban environmental work.

Sometimes, I think social change looks most of all like people sitting in a circle, or a meeting - or maybe on the phone, or at their computer.
