option to post "long" url to microblog

striatic   December 18, 2009, 08:49 AM

so plurk.com finally rolled out 23.com link embedding, which made me really happy!

but then i discovered it did not work with 23hq.com shortlinks, which made me sad : [

so i was wondering if it would be possible to get the option, under "status update options" to "post long form urls".

Can you detail the problem? We implemented oEmbed on or end to support this implementation; and of course our oEmbed works with shortened photo links. So I'm wondering if the problem is on plurk's end?

i contacted them about it, but to my perspective it looks like they asked for oembed support, and then ultimately used the 23 API instead.

here' a plurk demonstrating long urls working and short urls not working:

note also that they're using the 23 thumbnail size for the small version you click to enlarge, and i don't think that img url was available via oembed.

i'm actually a little tiffed at plurk staff because we asked them to embed 23 photos using the 23 API initially, then they had us go to all the trouble of asking for oembed support, only to this implement the feature using the 23 API anyway. or so it appears.

In either case, I'd say that the problem is on plurk's end -- resolving our short links into longer ones is a simple matter of doing a HTTP HEAD request; and the shortened urls work with oembed.

I'd opt against adding unnecessary clutter to the post options -- especially when it's intended merely as a work-around for plurk.

i guess the only real workaround is to send via email with the setting to receive an email notification, wait 5 minutes for the upload notification to arrive, copy and paste the photo url in the email notification into microblogging client of choice : /

i guess another reason for using long urls is if you wanted people to know just from the url that it was your photo and not someone else's, since the username is in the url.

your reticence is understandable though. thank you for your help.

I think plurk will get it sorted if we keep pestering them (within reason).
