Ok, here's one: do you guys shoot B&W, or do you post-process (in the camera or in computer) to monochrome?

Philipp Mertens   January 24, 2007, 08:42 AM

I usually shoot in RAW and in color.
If I want to have b&w images, i convert them later in photoshop.

I generally do the mertens..But my camera do not support the raw feature.. so...No way..
but I believe in post processing teh originality is partly lost..

The nice thing about post-processing is that you can use various techniques to get different monochrome effects. For example, processing to monochrome can really give some ordinary photos some punch, because you can choose the most interest channel to work from.

In-camera processing is often just grayscale conversion (exactly the same as "convert to grayscale" in many editors) which can sometimes flatten and "compress" photos.

But taking a full-colour photo and playing with the LAB or RGB channels in a creative manner can really give you a lot of ways to get interesting results.
