Quick experiment inspired by this photo http://www.23hq.com/photogroup/meetthegimp/photo/3271643

First I prepared a palette. Then I desaturated the photo and mapped the palette to it (Colors -> Map -> Palette Map). Have a look at its original size. The thumbnail shows resizing artefacts.

As andrewagill pointed out in his video, its nice to see that JPEG cannot handle these pictures efficiently. Indexed PNG is the way to go here.
