How to treat my stuff...

crazyrayman   January 15, 2011, 01:50 PM

Hi everybody,
I'm in love with the style this guy is applying to his pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/spasticdwarf/5214946147/

Is there any way to perform this kind of treatment in Gimp? Maybe there is a filter, routine or something available?!

Thanks in advance and have a great weekend!

did you try asking the person how they did it?

Not yet.. But you are right, I will try.

Hi!

Ofcourse Raval is right. You will get the best description by the author ofcourse :)
But even if he or she will not use Gimp I think that you will be able to do something similar.

At first: It is an interesting developed photo. You will get best result of course by using RAW material. And using an import filter like UFRaw.

But I think that you wanted to point to the effect of the orange lightning?

You can do most of it with a filter that one can buy for the camera itself.

If you want to do it in GIMP you need to use layer(s) to partially colorize your photo. You can do it with another photo or a painted graphic or something like this - and apply it with layer modes. If you never did something like this before search for tutorials for layer modes. It will help you if you try to paint something that looks like an original filter for a camera. The Flickr guy used well fitting layer(s). That's the whole secret in my eyes ;) Play with transparency, smoothing (orton effect) and screen mode. You will get good results if you work wit layer masks. Search for these key words for Gimp - and you will get far with the program!

Basically this will be the process. Everything else (like sharpening etc.) will be individually depending on your original material and your own style and fine tuning to receive a sufficient result.

Have fun!

Cosmonautirussi pointed out the orange sun effect. If you are interested in details of the special colour effect you have to seach abot the keyword "Crossprocess". Crossprocessing is the effect you get in the analog processing if you use a developer for colour slide films to develop negative films. Have a look at: http://www.lilahpops.com/cross-processing-with-the-gimp/

Hmm.. seems that crossprocessing is the topic I should have a look on... and I definitely need to spend some more time on layers.

Thank you!
