The photogroup, Forum and Blog

littletank   September 08, 2009, 03:29 PM

Because of the development of the Forum and the Blog this photogroup is no longer the place where discussions about photographic subjects take place. Also, for whatever reason, there appears to be very few of the original contributors to this photogroup left. I would be very interested to know who, in this group, like me, is still active in watching the weekly videos produced by Rolf Steinort and also who is interested in keeping this photogroup going. I believe that there is a lot to be gained by showing and discussing images so as to improve technique and this used to be the place to do it.

What do you think, shall we breath new life into this group or put it painlessly to death?

Both have their uses. The forum is much better for discussing with images for illustration or step-by-step guides. 23hq centers more on the images (well, that's what they are paid for).
So, on the forum the "workflow" would be: Post a suggestion or a question and images are attached to help understanding the comment. On 23hq however, you post the image first, maybe with a question attached, and receive comments on it.
But there is one occasion on which I have no idea which to prefere: The challenges. There's always an image, but the forum handles lots of comments and replies with images the better way (code segments can be highlighted etc.). But on 23hq Rolf can quickly skim through the images, organize and sort them. So it's a draw :(

There is, however, one difficulty with posting images on 23hq for question and comment in that many members of the Forum are not members of 23hq. Thus there would be Forum members who would not have the chance to see and comment on images and or benefit from those comments.

Hi

I'm suscribed to the conversations in 23hq, and from time to time some mail shows up in thunderbird... But I'm not actually visiting the site a log.

I keep on watching Rolf's shows but I usually watch them with some delay... I guess that work, family and stuff don't leave a lot of free time. But then again, meetthegimp is wonderful, even when you don't have the time.

And it is also a nice thing to have an space where you can update your pictures, looking for comments and criticism, while you can comment on other's pictures; the whole process is good for learning about photography. Even if you are not a very active member it is useful!

But of course it depends on how many people are using the site; maybe there are too little of us...

Anyways, I'd like the photogroup to keep alive. I'm going to put the rss thing to my google reader -which I try to keep up to date- and, with the mail notifications, I will hopefully keep an eye on stuff here; maybe I have a couple pictures that could benefit from a little C&C :-)

Regards

I think this forum should be abandoned and all discussions and comments should move to the meetthegimp.org forum and blog.

23hq is a great place to post photos, and for people to comment on specific photos. But since we are the "meetthegimp.org" group, I think people who post their photos should try to say a bit more about the techniques used, and perhaps even how those techniques relate to specific episodes of Meet the Gimp. Then when posting to Meet the Gimp blog or forum, one can provide a link to their photos here. People (like me) will surely follow those links and may add comments, questions, or suggestions to specific photos.

So in summary, drop the forum but encourage Meet the Gimp subscribers to show their work here.

I am not sure that I follow exactly what you are suggesting, I must be tired or something. In the early days before the MTG Forum people often used to post their images here which related directly to specific episodes of MTG. This gave those who were able, to comment and assist the aspiring GIMP users.

So, what do we do? Do we post our images here on 23hq, have a place in the MTG Forum where we draw the attention of Forum members to the images and continue to put our comments with the images here on 23hq? I like the idea of MTG subscribers posting their images on 23hq but, unfortunately, there appear to be those who subscribe to the MTG Forum who do not agree.

For those who might be interested you should be able to follow the discussion I started on the MTG Forum here:-

I do watch the videos, although I'm more a viewer that anything else, I've learned a lot, I would hate to see it die. I'm just a newbie, but that's they way I feel.

Hi, I`m still watching Rolf`s videos - although I`ve not posted anything to 23hq.com for a while - since I found more comfortable place for me to upload foto to.
Nevertheless - all videos are highly anticipated, thank you for them

I am delighted that you still enjoy Rolf's videos, so do I. It is also good that you get what you want from wherever you post your images.

Im new here just been watching rolfs videos and there all fantastic, must admit I have a little chuckle now and then :) ... oh yes my point I have just joined the group because I think it is a great place for people to have a natter about everything photography wise and show there work and gain positive criticism.
