Printing what you want to print?

I posed this question a few days back on the GIMP-devel list, but I never got a response, so I thought I'd ask here.

I need a color matching book, so that when I tell GIMP that I want a specific color, it will print that color, regardless of the printer used. There are a number of books out there, and none of them are supported by GIMP, and in fact probably won't be supported for some time.

By far, the industry standard is Pantone, which is very heavily protected by IP rights. I've pretty much accepted that GIMP will never have Pantone colors, but since there are competitors, I'm OK with that, since there are competitors.

The question is, does anyone have any suggestions for color match books that GIMP would be more likely to support in the future than others?

I see there's ANPA, DIC, FOCOLTONE, HKS, TOYO, and TruMatch. I also know that Munsell and a few government agencies make color match books. Any recommendations?

Honestly, I have no idea. But out of interest I googled a bit around. I found this site which offers a Python script (pantone.py) for creating two Pantone palettes for GIMP:

http://www.selapa.net/couleurs/nuanciers.php (French site).

The command "python pantone.py" resulted in two palettes which I could import in GIMP. I know it is not an answer to your question but could this be of any interest/help?

Serge, that is awfully close to exactly what I was looking for. I'm not sure how legal the script is, but it also has a link to How to legally obtain spot colour palettes for use in Scribus, which is also quite helpful and definitely looks legal.

Thanks a *lot*.

I am not a expert in legal matters but considering the fact that the script only uses publicized data of the Pantone web site, I think there is a good chance that it is legal. Anyway, I am glad it helped.
