all by date and all by subject.... : photos are all stored on a raiser FS in folders for the date.... a script scans for new Photos and add thumbnails to a database... every time I open the database access program i'm asked for the subject and comments for new photos....
so they are really stored by date, but with this DB thing its possible to find them by subject or comment....

@retro78
That sounds interesting. What kind of script and database do you use?

I have a file structure on my machine like
"originals/2008/01/23"
This way I can easily find my way around without using Digikam if I need to.
I use the tag system within Digikam to find my way around in other areas such as topics, ratings etc;
Regards Pete

@dennybob
no! it doesn't
I don't think it is a tool for the camera!
I never plugged my cam! just the memory cards and moved files....
you can start Gnome Photo Collection from a terminal with "gphotocoll" without the quotes.
but you need a postgresql database with configured users.
take a look at the link above, specially the "User's Guide".
btw:
@all
for better work with postgresql take a look at http://www.pgadmin.org/ - a graphical frontand to administrate postgresql databases
follow the instructions on http://www.pgadmin.org/download/ to get the newest version for your operating system.

I use Windows Camera and Scanner Wizard to import my photos from the card. I use a USB card-reader.
Photos are grouped in folders /Year/Month/Event Events that produce a lot of photos may have further subdirectories underneath. The Gimp is the default "opener" of .jpg files.
I make albums by creating shortcuts in an album folder.
I tried several "iPhoto" like programs.. One insisted on putting the pictures where it wanted, One had no tags (well neither do I, but I have albums)

To amigapc: I have thought of some of the online "free" storage sites as well as some of the pay ones. I have not tried any but, perhaps you could answer a question then. I was told on another board that, in the terms of agreement with Google in the Picasa site you are agreeing that everything posted on there actually belongs to them. The guy on the other site even had part of the agreement and it was saying all posted images would be considered their property. That sounds pretty scary. I would like to know more about it. Thanks

I'm referring to the stand alone program picasa. You can use the program to file photos in a way that best suits you style. I store my photos on a harddrive. I only use google photo to show friends selected photos. Here is the terms of service for picasa.

Are you able to store raw images in picassa, or do you need to convert them to jpeg or tiff first? Thanks

I not sure, my camera will only produce jpg's. Give the program a try, you may be surprised.
