Many years ago, when I was an active photographer and had my own darkroom, one of the best ways I found to help me improve my technique was the taking part in competitions. Like many photographers, I was a member of a local club which held internal competitions, based on pre-agreed subjects, for monochrome prints and 35mm colour transparencies. Then there were competitions between clubs and, national and international competitions, also for monochrome prints and 35mm colour slides. There was a maximum size for prints which had to be made by the person entering and the colour transparencies could be either commercially or home processed.
Having missed out on the transition stage from wet processing to the digital age I would be most interested to learn what, if anything, has replaced the competitions of old. Rolf issued two challenges, both of which have caused a lot of interest and, speaking for myself, caused me to look seriously at techniques which were new to me. But then, many things about GIMP are new to me. While following videos, reading books and discussions with other photographers are valuable learning aids, competitions would, in my opinion, be the icing on the cake.

May I refer you to the Tips from the Topfloor forum? We have a strong British crowd there, among them members of differnt Photography Clubs and participants in competitions. "Phooto" (Simon) and "Gary8345" come to my mind without thinking. Feel free to contact them wit me as a reference. This is Simon's club. I think the Club scene is well organized in Britain.
In the forum there are weekend and biweekly challenges, a little bit sleepy in the last time.
The podcast is worth to be heard too - back from the start.
I'll kick off a challenge here from time to time. But I'll make no competitons here - I am grading stuff enough in my daytime job. ;-)
