It is a glacier formed landscape, all escarpments and drumlins of the big lake constance forming after the iceage. Much later, as the ice receded and the lake reminder shrunk to a place far downhill in like 3 kilometres distance, it was modified by medieval clergy to use the pond systems up there for producing fat fishy lent dinners. Today its a patchwork of nature preserves on different protection levels, filled with wetlands, wildlife, old breed lifestock and veggie preservation projects along with comfy trails connecting assorted attractions with each other, all the popular big museums, famous churches, acclaimed wineries with posh outdoor gastronomy.... in season it can get really busy.
