upload trouble

Recently, the upload is choking on files quite regularly. In most cases it works to just re-add the files to the uploader a second time (event though this sometimes screws up the order), sometimes you have to start a new upload batch for it to work. But sometimes files are just not accepted.
Is there currently some server problem or is it the images themselves that are causing it? The files are fine, as far as I can tell.
I do remember this happening before but the problem just vanished quite quickly. Not this time, though.

Well, apparently waiting a couple of hours helps the server recover and the uploads are working again. Still, would be nice if someone had a look into that.

Agreed - really should look into that. Can you describe the error: Are you having trouble connecting or are the photos just not being processed after they have been uploaded?

In most cases I get the orange warning that some of the files could not be uploaded (apparently due to an unknown filetype?? — all of them are png). Then sometimes empty spaces appear in my latest images at the position where these images are supposed to be. There's no icon or preview for them but the original size _does_ work and produces the correct image if you navigate via prev/next to them. (I checked by downloading it and comparing the md5). Most of the times, however, the file is simply not uploaded at all.
Also, the uploader will sometimes not finish showing the image previews even though all of them have been uploaded already. So clicking "Save" will remove all visible previews but keep the page open not continue to the album view.
Even if I try to upload the rejected files by themselves half an hour later or so, they still won't come through. But several hours later it works. My guess is, the uploaded files are cached — wrongly — and it takes time to purge.

It's certainly a problem on our end -- and most like you're hitting a misbehaving front-end server. I put some extra debugging in place yesterday to see if we can catch the problem, but so far I haven't seen any red flags. If/when it happens again, send me a mail at steffen@23hq.com and include one or two of the photos you're uploading.
