wrong scaling of photos in portrait orientation

nachbarnebenan plus   March 09, 2013, 07:27 PM

I've uploaded some photos shot in portrait orientation and when viewed they get "squashed" into a square. The files are unmodified, directly off the camera jpegs. Both the thumbnails and the fullsize files are fine, so my guess is the exif detection is somehow returning wrong dimensions, causing the mis-scaling.

Which photos are we talking about? (You can also send me a sample at if you prefer.)

These ones from the 100 days challenge are affected:

This has never happened before, but I have also never uploaded jpegs straight from the camera before (always post-processed or raw-converted png), so the error might already exist for some time.

It happens to me a lot too. It's like an old issue. Lots of square pictures when uploaded in "portrait". Those photos are distorted in slideshow too.

You can only see them correctly at full resolution (a pain).

Like this one, uploaded today:

Used to happen on occasion - since a few months ago, it seems to be consistent for pictures uploaded via email from an iPhone in portrait mode.

Mine are not squashed, though, but cropped.

Here we go! We were missing a case in our rotation detection (apparently after upgrading exiftool). Has been fixed now.

Will existing previews/small versions be recalculated or will this only apply to new uploads from now on?

Steffen Fagerström Christensen Team 23   March 18, 2013, 09:31 PM

I need to find the magical command to send to the database to solve this quickly -- rather than having to loop through hundreds of thousands of image file. That's done now and the cropping gone.

Sorry for the long turn-around on solving this one.

nachbarnebenan plus   March 19, 2013, 07:17 AM

Ehm… it seems now the thumbnails are a bit squashed. And very pixelated, looks like they are upscaled from a previously cached version or so.

Thanks for taking the time to fix this.

When I look at what you linked above (like everything seem to be looking good?

nachbarnebenan plus   March 19, 2013, 10:13 AM

If you look at the portrait-oriented thumbnails in the first two rows of my recent uploads, you'll notice they are distorted. I've cleared the browser cache and if you include the images somewhere else, they're delivered just fine. So my best (and probably wrong) guess would be to damaged thumbnail caches on the server.

Meanwhile, I've just look to my last album, and there cropping disappeared in picture, but still remains in other pictures, like:

Think the thumbnail aspect ratio has been flipped now so the thumbs look better.

Interesting this doesn't seem to be a problem across all photos, when I browse around only is affected by the issue. Am I missing something?

nachbarnebenan plus   March 19, 2013, 08:36 PM

Yes, seems to be fixed now. Thanks!

The photos are:

Those pictures weren't take by me, but by a friend.

The one in the album that was "repaired", was taken by me, though..

All of them were uploaded at the same time in the album. Maybe your system cannot automate different exif versions in the same lot, I'm guessing.

Thanks for all your efforts. I remember a recent album full of cropped pictures that are now showing perfect!

I hope it helps you to find the solution, it might be several different cases.

Hmm, portrait ones are fine since the update - but portrait ones are cropped to square now.

Steffen Fagerström Christensen Team 23   April 01, 2013, 07:07 PM

Which ones, portrait or portrait? ;-)

Anders Pollas   April 02, 2013, 09:50 AM

That would be portrait fine, landscape bad :)
