LOL -- what a clever title!
I thought "Schwan"as we write it in german, orgins from what the bird gives forth when it feels the minimum distance is violated: "Shhhhhhhhh"

Sonja, what you said rang so many bells, I have read lots of stories about the mute swans in Lost Lagoon (Stanley Park, Vancouver).

For instance, like all ground-nesting birds they suffer greatly from off-leash dogs so some areas are now fenced-off.

Now that they are more protected, numbers are a problem.

I usually go by the range charts in the bird books, but these guys are introduced.

Which may explain why their flight feathers are clipped ...
