The girl Wegwarte was in oral folktale collected by poets in the 18th century a bride slighted by a young man not really planing to come back to her. So she took to waiting in the curbside and refusing all good advise, until she pined away and died. She turned into a lowly weed in the same place to be trampled rather than finding solace as she cried by the road and commited suicide by starving herself rather than forget about the stupid lout and go on with everyday life and of course to church on sunday. Moral advise for maids of the time pregnant by some wandering handyman that promised marriage later for virginity now, to be sure....
In an ancient mediterran version however it is the boy that was slain and whose mangled bones lay by the road so he could not return to his girl, and he became a weedy flower only after she walked out to search for him, found and recognized him. She collected faithfully all the missing bones into a heap, cried many salty tears over them and the gods took pitty on the couple, she became a pretty juniper tree, the bizarre heap of bones became a tough shrub to bloom in a somber blue at her base.
This version was not only a fairytale however, but more a story to memorize the content list for a recipe making a digestive home remedy -- and much later it was valuable inspiration for someone who experimented with making a replacement for coffee, one with cheap native ingediences and a close by taste, to try out cicory. :o)
