Yes, the White Veratrum is not a big helleborine orchid, neither a lenten rose with lots of blossoms. Beautiful to look at and an insect magnet never the less, but just a giant herb vaguely reminescent in the blossoms, and in the young green before inflorescence occures is more resembling Gentiana lutea.

From time to time someone spoils a batch of Gentian Schnaps into some dangerous poison that makes the bowels bleed, just from falling for the similarities without meaning to do it.

Only 2 years ago the theory that Alexander the Great died of a poison won from this plant rather than either arsenic powder or bad water from an underground stream carrying naturally some mysterious germs leading to illness began to gain foothold in official history... so this is the flower that may betray the bread and salt, capable of ending empires and legacys and survive it. Definately more dangerous and influencial than some others.

Das ist kein Nieswurz und auch keine der Orchideen die "nieswurzartig" im Genusnamen haben, nur der Englaender sagt "Falscher Helleborus" dazu. Und irgendwie gibt es so nahe auch gewisse Aehnlichkeit. Germer ist eine Melanthiaceae, also ein Liliengewachs das eher mit unseren Einbeeren und Simsenlilien und auch mit den amerikanischen Trilliums verwandt ist als mit Nieswurzen und Orchideen. Germer ist hochgiftig und dabei besonders fies, weil er als junges Pflaezchen dem Gelben Enzian fast gleicht, also bei Wildgraebern und Hobbybrennern in den Kraeuterschnaps gelangen kann und dort die Giftigkeit nicht verliert.
