No videos on Flickr

Father McKenzie (Steve)   April 20, 2008, 10:23 AM
Welcome to anyone that is visiting from the We Say NO to Videos on Flickr group.

I have been on 23hq for a few days and I am enjoying it more and more the longer I am here.

J_Images   April 20, 2008, 05:04 PM
hehe, hope it stays a video-free zone!

Karuloom   April 20, 2008, 05:14 PM
Yes, it is a cool enough place. What I don't understand, though, is why we cannot just have the viewcount with every pic -- the viewcount exists but you have to sort your pics by it to see it.

shoja3   April 20, 2008, 05:19 PM
I've been here for a few hours and I am SO loving it so far.

Steffen Tiedemann Christensen Team 23   April 20, 2008, 05:20 PM
Hi guys,

I had actually decided not to intrude on your conversations in this group, since I'm not strictly a flickr exile myself; but here I am breaking my own rule... It might be okay, since I'm answering a factual question? View counts for individual photos can be found (along with dates, licenses and exif data) by clicking the "More about this photo" link. We'll make an update within a few weeks which bring this information back to the photo page as well.

shoja3   April 20, 2008, 05:23 PM
Woops. I better edit my comment then...

Steffen Tiedemann Christensen Team 23   April 20, 2008, 05:26 PM
@shoja3: I already tumbled your original comment, so it's SO out there now: http://steffen.io/post/32333884 (*deleted*)

Karuloom   April 20, 2008, 05:31 PM
Thanks Steffen! The viewcount really is there :) Would prefer to have it with the thumbnails though, together with the comments count... maybe we flickr-infected people are just too fixated on viewcounts...

Oh, and where can I find the points thing explained?

shoja3   April 20, 2008, 05:35 PM
Steffen hahaha come on. Don't take me SO seriously please :)

I am still not used to the site, that's all. I like the fact that I can create my own CSS style though.

Steffen Tiedemann Christensen Team 23   April 20, 2008, 05:39 PM
@Karuloom, you can see viewcounts by ordering you photo lists through the drop-down box on every page. Choose "Views".
Obviously, this will also change the order of the photo pages.

Alternatively, you can add ?show=views (or "comments", "fotonotes", "favorites" or "rank") to your urls to change the view. I.e.:
http://www.23hq.com/steffen?show=views

There might be an explanation of the points score somewhere in the forum -- but basically, it's a score calculated from number of views, number of comments, number of favorites, number of fotonotes etc. with some twists and turns along the way. (It's basically the "secret" scoring algorithm we use in our search.)

J_Images   April 20, 2008, 05:40 PM
Ah! thanks Steffen. Good to see staff actually stepping in if there are questions or doubts! How refreshing.:)

hehehe: so the 'photo ranking' is comparable to the obscure 'FLickr interestingness' algorithm

Fred Jackson   April 20, 2008, 05:58 PM
This is really wierd; I can't get used to staff stepping in and actually answering questions! What an amazing site and it must be said that I'm enjoying it so far.

shoja3   April 20, 2008, 06:03 PM
It is also weird to have your original comment posted there by a staff just after you edit it! :D

Why is the edit button there then

Steffen Tiedemann Christensen Team 23   April 20, 2008, 06:05 PM
@shoja3: The cool thing about doing stuff like 23 is that we get make some people happy by building a site we love ourselves -- and also that another group of people disagree very strongly with our choices. Both of those things are actually quite refreshing!

So when I read your initial "hating it" comment I (arrogantly?) chuckled and read it aloud to my girlfriend. And that in itself merited its place on my tumbl log... I was glad that I managed to change your mind though ;-)

shoja3   April 20, 2008, 06:15 PM
Steffen hehe I apologise. I wasn't serious when I said that. It was just some slow downs I experienced, it could be my internet connection. I do love many things in this site, like the CSS for instance. Anyway THIS isn't a good start is it? lol

Since you're here, can I ask a question? Is the upload limit 30 a month or 300? I am confused. It said 30 when I registered but on the upload page it says 300?

Steffen Tiedemann Christensen Team 23   April 20, 2008, 06:22 PM
No offense taken, mate -- I've heard *a lot* worse.

The upload limit is 30 photos per month (we'll store the originals, and the are no other limits on free accounts). But we like to tempt new users by offering them 300 uploads during their first 14 days at 23.

shoja3   April 20, 2008, 06:35 PM
Ah thanks that's great!

ian legge   April 20, 2008, 09:55 PM
I too am from the 'we say no to videos' group. Can i ask while i am here, is there any sort of 23 'policy' regarding video? In a few months or years, when there are many more members and opportunities to turn a buck (like Flickr) what's the 23 long term view?

Father McKenzie (Steve)   April 21, 2008, 12:13 AM
I am shocked, truly shocked here is a nice photo site with all of the features of flickr and someone posts a problem in a group discussion and there is a staff member on hand to help sort it out. How good is that.

There are 30,000 in a group on Flickr about not wanting video and not a staff member to be seen. All it would have take over there was for a staff member to make a post regarding video but they decided to flip the bird to 30,000 people and basically say 'we have your $25 you can put up or shut up we will do what we like'

Well done 23hq, I have been tossing up between this site and two others to become a paid member but I think the action of Steffen has just confirmed my payment will be going here.

Maybe all annoyed flickr users should put a link to their 23hq page in the description of all their flickr photos.

Steffen Tiedemann Christensen Team 23   April 21, 2008, 05:00 AM
Hi guys,

A short note about video: We haven't got any immediate plans for offering video on 23, but on the other hand I can't give you a "read my lips" pledge that it'll never happen. We're already offering video as a part of our corporate photo sharing services. So sorry, no official policy.

I can tell you one thing though. If we choose to go include videos in 23, it'll most likely cost us money rather than turn a buck ;-)

shoja3   April 21, 2008, 05:47 AM
Hi again Steffen,

Just a question, did you really need to update the link of my original comment? Seriously, I didn't edit it to stay there, but you still want it to stay there? What's the point?

Steffen Tiedemann Christensen Team 23   April 21, 2008, 05:57 AM
@shoja3: No point really; I changed the domain of my tumblr thingy yesterday, which is why the link was edited. I've deleted the quote now.

shoja3   April 21, 2008, 06:18 AM
Thank you Steffen :)
And thank you also for being here and checking on us, that's something we don't often see in other sites! *thumbs up*

ian legge   April 21, 2008, 07:48 AM
Thanks Steffen, I too am shocked by having an actual person responding directly to a question! Well done you.

Karuloom   April 22, 2008, 08:36 AM
I am not sure what to do. I was already quite happy with 23, until I found this feature: http://www.23hq.com/forums/message-view?message%5fid=3048080

Sure, the spaceball.gif on flickr is far from bullet-proof but it still makes downloading more difficult and cuts off batch downloads. But here they even conveniently zip your pictures up for anyone to take. Since my main subjects are my son and his friends, I am not amused at all.

shoja3   April 22, 2008, 09:34 AM
I understand your concern, Karuloom, but there will always be a way to download your photos. I don't upload my photos on flickr in high resolution anymore. This way even if someone figured a way to download them, they would not be very useful for them.

shoja3   April 22, 2008, 09:36 AM
And yeah I don't like that anyone can download my whole album in a single click when I say "NO don't download them."

cangia   April 23, 2008, 11:11 AM
I'm with shoja3, but as team23 said, it's the downsize of sharing images; no one will ever be able to forbid downloading, either in a way or another.
I think the best choice, for us user, is to upload small sized images (I use to upload up to 800px the longest size); and for 23, the choice to let us download small and large size only.

F_a_b_i_o   April 24, 2008, 07:36 PM
Hi everyone, I hope we get a few thousands of new members... :-)
v. good idea to post the link in the NO videos on Flickr group.
