Alttrauchburg Ruin / Ruine Alttrauchburg

Looking at the leftovers of the residence. It is a lot as the lower floors had been very old, made with rounded huge stones, nothing you can use when building a chic late baroque castle in the valley. / Blick auf was fom Pallas uebrig ist. Es ist garmicht so wenig, vermutlich weil die Burg teilweise sehr alt ist und die unteren Stockwerke vorallem aus runden Feldsteinen und riesigen zugehauenen Steinbrocken bestehen, kein Baumaterial fuer ein nettes Spaetbarockschloesschen im Tal.

I doubt the houses built now would stand up to the elements as well for so long... =)

If it stood up only to elements, ther would be probaply still more than this.... it was a huge and most beautiful castle, not a mere knights keep, modified to standards of the time and accessible by a cart road. -- until 1784 when some owner decided to rather use it as a stone mine to build a new fine house with a level park. He was a von Waldburg-Zeil and had already an other impractical high up castle of own forbearers and he did not really need a bailiff living up there. He rather wanted a representative abode near Isny with a long straight driveway and formal park. One of his offspring who was born in the Neutrauchburg and heared a bit the new agrar-sciences at Hohenheim university then got the idea to close all dairies belonging to the castle and make into lumber. Since that time it looks like this. When Romantic was in full swing, whith the hiking movenent and middle-class exploration of nature and heitage the grandson of the first lumber baron allowed the ruin to be made into an official hiking destination and himself got an innkeeper that would show presence and sell refreshments in a wooden house with beer garden built into the outer ward leftovers. The castle into which the other stones went is also still possession of the family and the heart piece of a sanatorium group they own.

Our high nobility -- in therory the got no extra previlegues any longer but they amassed so much money in generations, that if they send their kids to modern bussiness schools they grow richer and richer still. The current head of the house Waldburg-Zeil and Trauchburg's private means are estimated about 650 millions (euro), so he is still well amongst those ruling others with their wallet.

Verstanden scheinst Du die Erklaerungen ja trotz Englisch ganz gut zu haben. ;o)
