Red-Headed Woodpecker ↔ Melanerpes Erythrocephalus
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Bushkill, Pike County, PA. Full spectrum color photo… ✍ These beautiful, shy woodpeckers were once fairly common in this area. Unfortunately, they are not only rare in this area now, but are listed as "near threatened" (International Union for Conservation of Nature) --- so, they're a step away from being listed as an endangered species. Individuals, like this one, who've had little interaction with humans are extremely skittish. I was lucky to get a shot of this one bringing food to its nest. A telephoto lens -- though I wished for a moment I'd had one at the time -- wouldn't have done much good --- in hindsight -- as I was out in the open so the activity associated with attaching it and all, would have spooked the bird and I would've gotten no shot at all..... I did not get any closer to the nest site as I didn't want to disturb the bird in any way. |
