Ceiling Detail of the Murray Hill Tunnel ⇢ Park Avenue Tunnel

Murray Hill, Manhattan, NYC, NY.
Full spectrum color, high definition + HDR photo merger…

✎ The 1,600 ft. (5 blocks, ¼mi.) long tunnel, then called the Murray Hill Tunnel, was built in 1834 as an open cut for the New York & Harlem Railroad (NY&H) which ran both steam engines and horsecars. The cut was roofed & bridged over in the 1850s, creating the tunnel — one of NYC’s oldest, if not the very oldest. The tunnel has carried trolley tracks, two-way traffic, and now northbound auto traffic. The relatively low clearance (8'11") only allows for passenger cars to go through.
