Extreme use of "curves" in GIMP has produced this startling and surreal image.

The end of days. Very modern, very sharp. I do like it.

Thanks PimpDaddy and acobi. This is the kind of thing that would take ages before digital made it so easy!

No doubt

It is so real and unreal at the same time!

Thanks, sandwashed. Yes, it's odd how the extreme curve has left some parts of the image almost as they started, whilst other bits are very distorted in colour and tone.

This gives me inspiration. Usually one should take care not to overdo things such as curves, but then, pushing them to the limits opens up a whole new area.
One question, is this the result of just some experimentation or did you already have something in mind which you at some point decided to try to achieve with curves?
StevieB March 24, 2008, 11:48 PM
Thanks, Serge. I absolutely agree with you that manipulations with curves, etc are most effective when they are subtle. In this instance I have deliberately ignored my own rules! I knew that the sort of curve I had in mind would produce a kind of digital solarisation (because I was making the output luminance much lower than the input luminance in some sections of the curve), but this precise result was indeed the result of some experimentation. The key variables are the relative peak and trough of the curve, and where along the input luminance axis they occur.

Like the fish-eye lens I used to take this shot, this effect is best used only very occasionally, but I'm glad you liked the result!
