If I try to reply to a post in the Forum, it takes me to a new page that just shows the original message and a text box. That's great for the first reply, but once we're a couple of posts in to a topic, I'm most likely replying to to one of the later messages in the thread - one that I can no longer see. That loss of context makes drafting responses to people unnecessarily difficult.
Can we have the reply box at the bottom of the thread - just like it is on the photo and group conversations, rather than on a page all on its own?

Agreed; in fact the plan is to merge forums and photogroups -- making conversations in support photogroups take over from these forum. This should solve the problem, right?

Yes - that would be great.

Would photogroups then get the "preview" option? :)

I don't think so -- I haven't ever actually used it myself. The combination of adding a message and then editing for formating seems to be just-as-good™.

If you are replying to a later comment, the best thing is to click the title of that comment first. That opens that particular comment in its own page. Then, choose "reply".
That way, the reply becomes a "child" of that particular post that you are replying to. Plus, you don't have the problem you mention of not seeing the post you want.

Actually, I quite like the forum version better than the photogroup version, for a couple of reasons.
One, you can grab a permalink that links to a particular forum reply.
Two, you can reply to a particular reply (although it is a roundabout way to do that... I would prefer a "reply to this post" button on each comment in the thread)
*edit* oh, I see that my "reply to a reply" is not nested in the listing, so it's quite confusing to know which reply I was replying to.

speaking of replies and contexts...
permalinks+anchor links for topics and replies would be handy... hard to refer people to other postings without them.
Forums have them (the linked number)... but photogroups do not. maybe just make the posting timestamp an undecorated link?

I think a merger of the two feature-sets might be in order. After forums become groups... I'd like:
1) permalinks on the date
2) preview option
3) some method of quoting or directing a reply at a previous author/post/permalink. Not threading... just a tool for targeted replies.
Preview is nice because many posts will immediately generate an email notification to many people... and subsequent edits are not reflected in this notification.
The reply-to feature might be nice to integrate into notification subscriptions too:
1) email me all replies
2) email me only directed replies to my posts.

So, as you may have seen (or you're seeing it now) we've moved everything from the old forums into their own photogroups. Benjamin is still dreaming up some icons for each support group and we'll be updating the page at /forums in a short while with some eye candy. For now though, there's a bug search box to let you search through all the support groups in a single stroke.
Permalinks, yes we can do that.
As for notifications; that's already as part of photogroups.

So, now there are icons -- and some small optimizations including permalinks (cc eclickykbd)
