The island of Krk is located in Kvarner bay, in northern Adriatic, south of Rijeka. Krk is a great sailboat charter destination because of many ports and marinas. The island is connected to the mainland and the town of Rijeka by a bridge.

Krk's shores are indented with many bays and beaches. The largest bays are Puntarska Draga and Soline. Woods, vineyards and olive groves cover the area of the central and western parts of the island while the southern part is characterized by barren landscape. Two lakes (Jezero and Ponikva) are important water sources for the villages.

For centuries the island was the center of Glagolitic culture. Baska Tablet and the Vrbnik Statute are some of the most imporant Glagolitic monuments in Croatia.

Larger settlements on the island are: the town of Krk, Omišalj, Malinska, Punat, Vrbnik and Baška. The town of Krk is the administrative and tourist center of the island. There are numerous monuments dating back to Illyrian and Roman times worth visiting. Some of these include: the old City Hall, Krk Cathedral and the 13th century Frankopan castle.

Punat is located on the southwestern coast and is the island's second largest settlement. It boasts one of the best fully-equipped marinas in the Adriatic. When sailing around Krk make sure to visit the islet of Košljun in the vicinity of Punat.

Vrbnik is a settlement on top of a high cliff in the eastern part of Krk. The area around the old medieval town, the Vrbnik Plain, is covered with vineyards. Excellent Žlahtina wine is produced from the indigenous grape varieties.

When visiting the island of Krk on a sailboat you can relax in many bays and coves. Sail to Malinska or Vrbnik if you prefer sandy beaches. Beautiful beaches are located in Šipanja bay. Long pebble beach in Baška is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Krk. For more sailing destinations in Croatia visit sailingeurope.com
