D'Oh a Deer! I came around a corner and suddenly a deer. Seems early in the year to me. I was worried about being stampeded because there was what looked like a tall hedge behind it (animals are *most* dangerous when cornered). When it got tired of me it turned around and high-jumped about 10 feet over the hedge.

I would try to lighten the dark green thing a bit. But it's not really distracting to me. :-)
The dark green thing is a tree or something, no good way to chop it down.
The green line doesn't distract too much, since all the attention immediately goes to the face (and particularly the ears, I find).
Marco, I was more startled for sure. I was also worried it might stampede me.
I agree that the ears are what make this picture.
As far as fixing stuff, the less the better, as doing it convincingly is actually a ton of work.
Here the muzzle hairs and the leaf are one. But thanks for the suggestion.
Knowing when to stop is a hard lesson to learn.
[In GIMP each adjustment can be on its own layer.]
Anywhere there's a high-contrast edge is a real problem.
Everything looks really murky now, probably my monitor needs calibrating...
So my next thought was: what is the picture actually about?
It's really a surprise encounter - so I processed it that way.
