Actually they are considered the very same you call Eared Grebe. And in fact, I had my first sighting ever when living overseas, so I wait if they split it up as I may get an other armchair tick. ;o)
A rather recently returned breeding species here in the Lake Constance area. 12 or 13 years ago there was a nest somewhere the nature organisations allowed the local press some coverage but kept the exact location top secret. Meanwhile any well accessible pond without any encouraged recreational use but nature watching has chances of a few animals summering paired up as a couple and several of those managed to raise a clutch. When we moved here, there where only smal flocks of wintering specimen in selected harbours, and strangely some of those lost the winter population they where famous for since, whilst the reproducing summer population increases.
