That looks strange. It's some of the bricks that are missing?

no, just randomly eroded. can't figure out why

I think it's different types of brick being used. Then they'd erode at different speeds. Most of them are irregularly shaped pieces of rock, the others are standard red bricks.

Oh, and it's a lovely photo ;)
