What should a new 23 logo look like?

We're currently doing a visual design upgrade to 23.
More clarity, more focus on the activities you do on 23, a bit more eyecandy without obstructing the focus on the photos. Nothing big - just a bit of evolution.
In that process we're also looking at the logo. To be honest we've spend something like 30 minutes on our logo identity process including the creative production - so we would love to do something that become the logo to be.

Current dreaming is:
- keep the photo frame concept, 23 as the new frame/space for your photos. should probably me more wide, more of a 10x15 photo format
- more diversity, more life. if it can be pulled of somehow.
- more unique choice of typography, etc.
- not really sure of the red colour and it's symbolic value

What's your dream for the 23 visual identity?

The frame idea is nice. But why certainly the new display for photos - it's much more than that; interaction and storage.... I'm thinking more along the lines of something boxy - or playful/conversational...

I am curious... What´s the meaning of number 23?

We have already talked about new features, but, in fact, which direction does 23 want to take? Crowds os users? Or less users and more real photo lovers?

If you wanna benchmark your new logo design against the current web 2.0 look-n-feel there is a nice overview here:

i don't see 23 logo there
anyway, i like (2.0) minimal design but it's becoming awfully boring, like all those names that ends with 'r' , the same color palettes etc.
23 have really nice and simple design, especially logo, maybe a bit stronger/different colors in icons&menu bar, to move away form mentioned 'minimal-2.0-ipod' color world.

about 23 name >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_23_enigma :D

23 name from http://23hq.com/23/about/
And the big Q - why are we called 23?
- We'll turn it around and ask a question. How many people do you need in a room in order for the probability to be more than 50% that two of them shares the same birthday?. Yeah, 23. A shocking low number that shows that we're all much more alike than we like to think.
In terms of direction we're in the 500 million people buy a digital camera every year but are left with lousy complex non-social tools camp - there's a bit more at http://23hq.com/23/about/

Great suggestions.

ok - here goes..

Move the three to the left and up, so the individual numbers interlocks. Resembling 2^3, a series of numbers or WEB 2.0 moving into 3.0 (BS).

For colors I imagine some strong pastel-like colors (green ,pink, purple). The frame (which should not always be used) in widescreen in some matching color.

You could also have a solid color version where the overlays of the 2 and 3 is in inverse color.

I think the frame-logo is too harsh
I do like the simplicity of the interface, and think that is what 23 is all about - the logo and story comes in second.
I think it should be as simple as possible and don't agree on looking towards a certain web 2.0 look.
Personally hope 23 and web logos in general will move away from the cartoon like graphics – they seem more Imac'96 than Powerpro'06...
Thomas Madsen-Mygdal Team 23 March 02, 2006, 06:35 PM
what we're looking at is making the "frame logo" more like a "photo logo" - toning down the frames.

we're in now way going for a web2.0-look whatever that means.

any thoughts about colors?

warpten March 02, 2006, 07:35 PM
any (well not any.) purple or orange tones, this red frame could associate to 'stop/no/forbid' signs
mach March 02, 2006, 08:15 PM
sorry... of course I should have bracket "web2.0" (whatever it is, agreed) it was just an impressive bunch of logos that could inspire any other way. But talk is cheap is there somewhere (mail) one could submit a concrete suggestion for a logo!
nanna munnecke barlby March 02, 2006, 08:42 PM
I quite liked the dusty limegreen colour used in the early days (days ago!)
I second Mach / a pool of logo suggestions - maybe an account just for visualising 23:)
Thomas Madsen-Mygdal Team 23 March 02, 2006, 08:54 PM
yeah, that limegreen was pretty nice.

got no clue how we could handle logo prototypes - but please do upload them openly to your account and post a link here...

Love and eternity long photo sharing for anyone that comes up with anything we use or use elements of
mach March 03, 2006, 12:09 AM

It's a PNG file so anyone and everyone can grab it and work more on it - if it is any good. I had great fun doing these, but now I must get to bed :)

Steffen Fagerström Christensen Team 23 March 03, 2006, 12:24 AM
Mach, those are great! The last one seems a bit too real (as in real.com) though?
mach March 03, 2006, 07:02 AM
@Steffen: Thanks! Wooow yeah your absolutly right about the real.com.
kodaky March 04, 2006, 12:25 AM
I like this red color and the idea of "stop sign", it could even be a round frame... I see it needs a Type work, the number's font should be an original one! Not this Arial font

pastel colors? it is so... so common sense!

Volker March 06, 2006, 01:31 PM
why don't u tag logo-suggestions with sth like "new23logo" or so?
ps: i like the simple style, i hope it won't get too fancy.
U said it took u less than 30 minutes for that logo?
OK, so now imagine you put lots of brain and hours into creating a good logo - you'd possibly end up exactly on the logo you have :-) - why change?
Think about it.

just my opinion.
Cheers Volker

Steffen Fagerström Christensen Team 23 March 06, 2006, 05:57 PM
Volker, don't worry. The iterations I've seen are based on the same simple idea and roughly the same colours and shapes. I'm not taking part in the process though, so I may well be wrong...
Thomas Madsen-Mygdal Team 23 March 06, 2006, 10:43 PM

you're probably right - how absurd it might sound.

that we'll end up spending 20-30 times the amount of time the original logo took in all to create and end up with something that most people would say is almost the same!

so i guess it's more like that it needs to be all it can - for us to feel confident that in our identity - for us to feel that we've given it all the we can. even if it's only 10% better than what took 30 minutes. hey, we might have turned into perfectionists in our old days here - instead of going with the "blink" what feels right. hmm...

pbixe March 07, 2006, 09:38 AM
i like volker's point.

I read something today that talked about the notion of branding with look and feel. The idea is that one should survey the field and see how other sites are branded, and try to come up with a unique place on the "icon colour wheel".

This is assuming one agrees that the primary brand of a site or application (and what is 23 if not a web-based app you run from your desktop?) is the colour of the icon.

I guess this is why I like the current icon -- it seems to be on it's own on the colour wheel.

clvrmnky March 09, 2006, 12:56 AM
Idea: a photorealistic image of a matte 5x7 print with a border (which satisfies the desire for a border), perhaps slightly curled-up in the corner. Perhaps with a drop-shadow, but this may be too Aqua/OS X for some folks.
The Replicon March 10, 2006, 09:00 AM

i can make the logo out of paperclips too.

i need a job.

mark March 11, 2006, 05:13 AM
It might be wise to check if images are "adult" before they show up on the (randomly selected?) frontpage. My first view of 23 included "lanboy2002"s hentai drawings. Were I female, or over 30 I wouldn't have stuck around long enough to write this message.
clvrmnky March 24, 2006, 08:52 PM
Mark: How is this on topic? Check the "Discussions" section for the thread that discusses this, including a reply by 23.

Should have been adressed now, though...
