Got my n95 in an unsealed opened box with no evidence that the phone hadn't been used before (no sealed plastic packaging, etc.). Anyone else experienced this?

The box looks kind of jacked up.
I have to admit that I am wuite excited to hear your opinions on the phone. I am looking into getting one myself, but the reviews found on the usual websites are not rather flattering.

Nokia has been on a tear lately, ensuring that their operations are more eco-friendly. Part of that is using less shrink-wrap and making sure the packaging and most phones are recyclable as much as possible.

I mention this only to note that the last Nokia I unboxed was not shrink-wrapped, but did have a laser-cut seal over the top and bottom openings. I'm surprised this one doesn't have such seals, and doesn't appear to ever have had these seals.

no operator-specific stuff - bought it without a subscription.

early verdict. it's a wauv experience having a tool like this in your pocket (5mp, dvd video, gps, fmradio, musicplayer, etc.).

The ui is very snappy compared to N93, etc.

There's a reason why doesn't ship killer products - the total experience is in many ways a mess. (a basic example shipping a phone with 10-15 app's that doesn't work or just ask for server details (push-to-talk, i'm, visualradio, etc.).
There's a reason why the iphone is a "product" and not a mobile operating system.

Battery.
Started the day with a full battery, went dead picking up the kid at four o'clock. Without having had really long conversations (we'll probably like an 40-50 minutes full talktime) - just showing the phone to the other 23 guys, taking 5-10 photos, etc. (probably lot's of screen use). And still figuring out battery savings efforts in terms of wlan/gps.

Verdict. Definately the best "computer phone" Nokia ever has shipped. The perfect device - nope...

n95 insight.

it's becoming a real game guessing whether your phone survives through the day without charging.

today it did. it died on battery here 21 minutes past midnight ;). (and was fully charged at 8am.).

Hmm, dont like the sound of a short battery life. Are you walking with the GPS turned on at all time :-D?!

Talking about the GPS. Does it works as a GPS for the car or?

For now, I'm staying with my Sony Ericsson K800i, it seems :)

Yes, keep your comments coming! For now I'm happy with my N73, but new gear is new gear AND FUN!

@jakob. not really sure whether it's on at all times - i've been presented with no options to state whether it should.

(this is perhaps one of these tools where you really should rtfm ;).

.. well I got my brand new sealed N95 three weeks ago. After having used it ever since more or less exclusively for not making phone calls I must say that I'm impressed by the potential it has technology wise.

- The battery issue seems to get better over time (after some learning circles). However I've bought two spare batteries (just in case ;-)

- GPS is really tricky up to the point it has locked into min. 3 satellites; it somtimes takes up to 5 minutes ... once it has locked it works. Haven't tested it in my car ...

- I did not find out yet how to make crisp photos with the camera yet. The ones I've made with objects beyond > 20 mtr. have mostly been out of focus ... other appear to be quite 'flat' missing some sort of depth of focus. May this is the tribute that even though the camera records with 5MP the image size rarely goes above 1 MB! ???

anyone know of firmware updates to it yet?

(i'm told n80 was really bad on the initial shipped firmware, but was vastly improved in later versions ).

My German version has been updated some two weeks ago (now: V 11.0.026 17-04-07 RM-159) with the effect that the shutter time went down which means that the camera is back for the next shot faster.

Even though some people report that GPS locks quicker after the update I can't really confirm on a subjective level.

It seems that 3 is offering the n95 now. Any further thoughts Thomas? - Im getting real tired of my k800i.
Thomas Madsen-Mygdal Team 23 September 14, 2007, 08:36 AM
hmm, wouldn't buy it as an upgrade to k800i.
