c. gibbs @ the rodeo, nyc 01/30/08 - seeing c. gibbs at the rodeo bar is, in spirit, like seeing coltrane at the vanguard. it is just the perfect place to hear this music (altho did see him at the slightly more avant knotting factory and the music worked very well there as well). the genre impossible to pigeonhole - sort of the classic country death ballad in a minor key with a  blast of pure feedback tossed in occasionally. "nick cave crossed with tom waits" as his myspace page notes http://www.myspace.com/cgibbs, which is a good as any starting place to check the tunes out. the man can play the hell out of his electric/acoustic and managed to easily fill two hours with original music, not a filler song in sight (oh and a couple covers hank williams and mississippi john hurt). the band was right there and came steamrolling back after the first set. the bass player, greg kept the show together and hopping, the guitarist mike cohen added some tasty licks and is a master of the pop/bang distortion at the end of a note and the drummer kristen mueller was so much fun to watch -she was havin a ball up there.
the pinkermen set here http://www.amazon.com/Pinkermen-Set-C-Gibbs/dp/B00006JNEQ and the equally fine parade of small horses here http://www.amazon.com/Parade-Small-Horses-C-Gibbs/dp/B0007Y8AVA.
apparently he has another band Lucinda Black Bear, playing soon - hopefully i will make that one. here's a video from them - http://motion4music.com/lcb_web.mov

oh really? ha! then so-cals are not so bad, just like mister thomas alan waits, from around here too... found on Tom Waits: "would later claim that it was during trips to Mexico with his father, who taught Spanish, that he would first find his love of music, through a Mexican ballad that was "probably a Ranchera, you know, on the car radio with my dad.", oh rancheras songs are good, maybe you can re-mix one too!
