holiday in USA, to honor the death soldiers in any war... am i right insky? but i am sure, is that it is indeed very American holiday...

Thanks :). I don't tink we have anything similar here in Denmark besides the day in May when some people put lit candles in their windows to honor the persons who fell in the restistance against the germans in WW2

as you can see, I'm not insky, but thought I'd add a piece here. b, you are correct. It's official purpose is to remember fallen soldiers. But, it evolved into a day to remember deceased loved ones, as well. Older generations often refer to Memorial Day as 'decoration day' which, actually, was the original name of the holiday.

not at all - glad you butted in:) nice words & had forgotten 'decoration day' myself. yes, ostensibly to honor the dead, but as with most holidays, has bloated into a vacuous catchall most notable for picnics and the indy 500. do miss a good barbecue tho...

and yes, the BBQs--yummy didn't have time for the usual M.D. BBQ at my sister's place this year. but, alas, 4th of July is right around the corner . . .
And, thought this funny since this conversation had taken place--got an email from an older uncle today that included a pic of my grandparents' graves taken on (his words) decoration day.
