My i5 Slimline PC Build
I wanted a slimline PC with a bit of spare horsepower for the odd heavy task.
It should be small and quiet and run 2 monitors.
It should also boot in 20 seconds and be as cheap as possible too.
- CPU: Intel i5-3470 (4x3,2GHz)
- Motherboard: microATX: ASUS P8H77M incl. onboard intel graphics
- RAM 8GB Kingston (1600Mhz DDR3)
- CPU Fan: Scythe Shuriken 2B Low profile heat pipe fan
- SSD: 120gb Samsung 840 (SATAIII) for boot, OS, settings and basic data files
- HDD: For remaining heavy data. 1TB Seagate
- MicroATX Case MS-Tech LC-01 (9.5 x 30 x 40cm)
- Wifi: ASUS PCIe Card 300mbps (PCE N15)
- Power Supply (SFX): 250w Xilence (to replace the noisy one already in the case)
1) Drop in the CPU
2) Shut the CPU clamp
3) Get Tom from Tomshardware.com to check it!
4) Ram in some RAM
5) CPU cooler backplate on the back of the motherboard
6) Attach the cooler legs for this CPU. Then heat paste it up.
7) Screw on the cooler assembly to the backplate
See the RAM is slightly covered by the big 120mm fan
See the low profile height of the cooler. Ideal for the 9.5cm high case.
8) Slide the motherboard in the case back plate
See the WIFI card in position.
The Power supply was removed to fit the motherboard in.
9) Replace the SFX Power supply
See the big fan covering the RAM.
In this location it aligns with cooling holes in the side of the case.
Above the big fan you can see the case fan clipped to the side of the case.
The case fan made this a squeeze and I should have removed it as I'm not connecting it. It is probably quite noisy too.
10) HD + SSD in place ready to mount the DVD/front assembly
The HDD (white label) screws directly into the case.
The Samsung black SSD can be seen on top of the white HDD. It just lays there with foam on either side and gets squashed into place when the DVD (grey box) is fitted in place as part of the front assembly.
11) Finished PC with front assembly screwed in place.
The WIFI antennae can be seen on the left side.
12) There is a 20mm gap from cooler to case lid when closed.
The case is generously perforated there too.
The white Meister screwdriver is just there for scale.
Don't worry. I took it out. (I think!)
