used overlapping vertical and horizontal images to get skyscraper. hugin seemed to do pretty well. Have to figure out why I don't get the auto control points.
This was shot with a Sony DSC-P93A 'point and shoot' 5MP camera.
There are 8 horizontal and 4 vertical images stitched together.
I don't know if the distortions are due to the quality of the lens or my not knowing how to use hugin (or both).
I kind of like the jagged border where I inserted the vertical pictures.

I would say, Hugin did a good job. You may play with Hugin's different possibilities of projection, but this one is fine. I never tried to mix differently orientated images in Hugin.
