looks almost like huichol yarn-paintings.

Yes!!!!! You're right!!! :D This was made by a Huichol family that's why the car was called Vochol (vocho and huichol mix) in Mexico this type beetle is called vocho :)) and instead of yarn they used chaquiras (beads) and campeche wax to fix them to the car :)) ..they are experts doing this kinds of jobs, look at the "painting" on this picture.. is all made by huicholes with beads as well:
