oh yay--you found me! I had to laugh at myself when I took this shot--I realized I'm showing my age. I decided I'd take a pic of the "new" water tower. But it happens to be 25 years old!

These are so synonymous with how we Europeans think of the small(er) US town (probably from various nostalgic films). Are they less common now?

No, no--they are still quite common. My town is very, very small--population of only 3800, which is down about 2,000 residents from when I was growing up there. But this style (and various versions of it) is still prevalent.
