Could you provide more info on how to do it?

Jean-Pierre: first you need software for stitching. On Windows I would use autostitch (freeware and terrific results), on all OS Hugin should do the trick - right now I am using DoubleTake on MacOS X.
You shoot your motive with about 15-20 % overlap, a tripod is helpful, you need consistent lighting and preferably same aperture, shutter and focal length, and the focal length and lens with the tiniest distortion you have. It will work with any lens, though - the lighting is crucial. Usually, you just load your pics into the software, maybe fiddle with the settings, and you are done and let the soft render it out. Most have automatic and manual choices. Just try and play with it :-)

Excellent! Is there maybe just a hint of darkness in the bottom centre of the image? The most impressive thing is that the whole multi-image still has an overall and convincing composition.

Stevie, thanks, and yes there are a few flaws, such as the sky behind the top of the central crane is too dark... whereas the bottom centre seems to be a problem of the actually various materials on the ground there.
This was a byproduct of my photography class, standing on an elevated point above the museum harbor part (a stairway crossing a wall). I just couldn't resist trying to capture the scenery although the 50 mm lens was far from perfect for that purpose.
