I'm thinking of renting this lens to check it out for controlled light or candid portrait use. If we use the "5m" rule for portraits, this lens should allow for some intimate moments while capturing a lot of natural light.

I imagine this might be good for candid street-life shots as well, since you have to be quite a ways back (especially on a DX format like a D80) to get the whole scene.

Should also be very good for pin-up or glamour photography, too!

I wonder if the f1.4 is that much better than the f1.8?

I just bought the f/1.8 version of this lense, but as I've only used it once at a gig, I can't say for sure what I think about it yet.

But the sheer weight of it is indirectly convincing me that it's a good lense (:

Yeah, this would make a good concert stage or close-in sports photography lens. Do you have some shots uploaded taken with the f1.8 wide-open?

A couple of the shots in this album was shot with the 85mm f/1.8D lens. Keep in mind that my postprocessing and photo skills in general is not all the way up there (:

I hope they give an idea of the lense though.

Thanks. I'll check them out. Even with lame processing skills (like mine!) we should be able to check out the edge-to-edge clarity, vignetting (if any) and bokeh.
Sadly, some idiot^h^h^h^h^hmisguided person on eBay just outbid me for an 85mm f/1.8 version of this lens, paying nearly what I would buying it brand-new from my local photoshop.
