This classic lens should be in everyone's bag. On a DSLR this 50 feels more like a 75mm, so this is pretty much a perfect portrait lens. Some folks prefer a 90mm or 105mm for this, but I say you ought to get closer to your subject!

Looking for a good used version of this lens. The f/1.8 version is probably fine (I have not compared images between the two) but I want the fastest glass I can get so I can capture more intimate moments.

Also, if the optics are that much better, it will be obvious when shooting faces and people wide-open, not to mention that most primes are best 1 or 2 stops down from their widest.

Many reviews suggest (and show with example images) that the f1.8 version is actually just as good, since this one isn't very good when used wide-open.

Until I can afford that 35mm f2, I think $CDN149 for the 50mm f1.8 is a steal!

It is, the f/1.8 is really good. I haven't tried the f/1.4, but a friend has it, and tells me he has issues with flare when he uses it, even when shooting regular scenes with normal lighting. Anyway, at the price for the f/1.8 these days, you can't afford not to have it. By far my prefered lense on anything apart from landscape shots. I have some shots on my account shot with this lense.

Nice bokeh! Yeah. The next time I go to my local shop I'm going to pick this one up.

The cheap-and-cheerful Canon 50mm f/1.8 you probably have is pretty much considered one of the best values for a prime lens. A friend has a Canon, and he picked one of those up really cheap in San Francisco. It is very nice lens.

The various 50mm from Nikon are considered similar in quality, though the consensus is that the high cost of the f/1.4 is not worth it.

Since most primes are best stopped down 1-2 stops anyway, and shooting digital with good noise reduction means you don't have to run wide-open all the time (even in low-light) I'm thinking f/1.8 is just fine.
