It does bring the patterns in the wood out and make the twigs much more tangible, but I'm surprised tweaking it did much at all considering the original was almost exclusively brown.

I have to admit I didn't use this exact image. I actually reprocessed the real original from scratch to clean up the white balance, juice up the little colour that was present and increase the contrast (without blowing out the darks or whites).

Only then did I convert to greyscale. New RGB source here:

I was never happy with the colour and contrast on the images I published as my March Day Shoot album (, but my Photoshop Kung-fu was weak.

But, I have a new workflow and a few years of practice, so I've been re-examining my older images to see what I can do with them now.
