What a beautiful lens!
I can't say anything bad about this lens. Ok, the AF can seek a lot, but it focuses pretty fast and can be set to focus through a shorter range when you know you don't need to throw the focus quite so far, which speeds things up.
On a DSLR, this lens feels more like a 160mm, so you have to stand away from some objects to get it to focus. This is actually a boon for those of us hat like to follow around insects at a safe distance. At lower-light conditions you need a tripod to get clear photos, but most macros enthusiasts already know this. This is the primary reason to spring for the VR version!
The depth of field is amazing -- almost too amazing! You have to reallt make sure you know what you are focusing on, and even the slightly tweak will make a difference in the DOF.
fortunately, switching to manual focus is a snap: you just rotate the locking focus ring and instantly have 100% control over the the focus. For studio work you will keep the lens in manual mode most of the time. I see the latest version has replaced the locking ring with a switch.
The bokeh is gorgeous! This lens is so bright and true edge-to-edge that images are sharp enough to cut. Absolutely no chromatic aberration that I can see.
Nice deep front element acts as a built-in shade. Solidly built. If you are a macro fan and shoot Nikon, you need this lens. Budget for the latest version, as this lens has only gotten better. The upside is that a lot of folks are upgrading to the latest version, making it easier to find deals on used classic releases.
