i took these photos straight into black and white with the settings of my camera, later that day a good photographer told me is not recommendable to use the black and white settings built in cameras... i had taken these already anyway...

I don't think it's so much "not recommendable", but more that you restrict the control you have over how the B&W tones are represented. In my view the best way is always to start with an RGB image and then use the channel mixer in GIMP or PS, holding luminance constant. Then you can create subtle nuances, and deal with things like sky/cloud contrast with ease.

thanks Stevie, and i think you and the good photographer are on the right track, better capture originally all the range of colors and in any case manipulate the channels to get a more nitid black and white, that way the result can be less "flat"
