I tried to process this to look as close as possible to how I experienced
it in real life, but in reality the sun itself was more somewhere between
red and hot pink. I couldn't get the sun the correct color and tonalities
somewhat correct at the same time, so I compromised the color of the
sun. Next time, I might try hdr and see if I can get it right that way...

In reality we concentrate on bits of a scene at a time, and then construct a mental composite.

This is why pictures are often so bitterly disappointing.

It looks pretty good to me, I pick the most interesting part and expose for it.

You could try a blended exposure - sky, sun, treeline.

But the treeline is obvious (plus probably no detail), so try sun & sky?

Thank you mramshaw!
I could easily paint the sun in the color I remember it, but the problem
then becomes that it would be too close in color and tone to the surrounding
sky (just outside the disc of the sun) - and that doesn't look good at all.
I think a blended exposure would have the same problem.

It might be worth trying as a learning exercise.

But the sun looks like a sun to me, very natural, even if it's not what you remember.

It's always nice to have a strong separation between subject (sky) and background (surprisingly, the sun here).

So I think it works pretty well as a picture...
