Interesting to find 'em independent of someone's garden.... Maybe it speaks to a former residence...

Really some wild Paeonia officinalis or even Paeonia mascula nobody dug up or some cultured form that went on a hike with dumped soil?

Thank you Fizgiz. Well, I have seen them looking just like this in other areas of these mountains and always far from any garden or path! SO I am led to think that they are truly wild!

Ah.... Must be Paeonia mascula then, which would be native to Spain. Hope you can forgive my mistake --- it's hard to ID 'em when the flowers aren't full open =)
