Agrigento (Roman: Agrigentum) was originally known as Acragas and was one of the colonies occupied by Greek settlers during the "Magna Graecia" period of colonization. Among its rulers was the tyrant Phalaris, who could supply a more vivid meaning to the U.S. Constitutional phrase prohibiting "cruel and unusual punishments." Look him up sometime; he was quite a fellow.
