This massive altar was the site of an extraordinary sacrifice and festival, at which as many as 450 oxen were sacrificed as thanks to the gods for the overthrow of the tyrant Thrasybalus. Afterwards, the oxen were cooked, and Siracusans were treated to a very big barbecue, indeed.
