Nice picture, but perhaps too much colour range?

I've had good results with Bert Adagio's HDR plug-in.

Hi mramshaw, I appreciate all your comments! By "color range" do you mean the colors are too saturated? If so, then I agree the colors could be a bit less vivid. I have the tendency to overdo colors. If you mean that the colors are a overexposed and possibly even blown out at the top, I also agree. I only noticed it after I posted the image. I should have checked all three histograms. Incidentally, it is not HDR.

Nowadays I use GIMP only for finishing effects, such as frames and drop shadows, or special effect filters. I started using Nikon software called Capture NX2 which is very convenient and powerful. It does the best conversion of Nikon raw files and it understands all of the camera settings. My main motivation in switching was for improved raw conversion. Ufraw is a great tool, but it cannot possibly do as good a job as proprietary software.

When I was using GIMP for everything, I used Adagio's range selection script for HDR, and his Easy Zone adjustment script for setting white and black points. Now I do those things in Capture NX2 (and HDR in Photomatix).

I like the saturation but it looks like a slight loss of highlight detail.

You can blend exposures to fix this, but it can get very fiddly.

On the other hand, there may not be any actual detail there.

No, I think you are right, there is loss of detail.
