The guides in the photo are Gimp's "golden section" guides. I was surprised at how well they fit the shell. Someone suggested that the golden spiral (or the fibonacci spiral) would give a perfect fit. I worked out the math and made another version of this photo with the fibonacci spiral overlaid on the shell. The fit was terrible! After doing some research, I discovered what others have already discovered: that the chambered nautilus does NOT follow the golden spiral! Fun exercise. Logarithmic growth makes sense but the factor was unexpected.

The 'Rule of Thirds' (that should probably be 'Rules of Thirds') works about as well here as 'Golden Sections'.
