12 months in Hong Kong by Chris Lee

For the Memory Capsule I would like to share some of the recent events in Hong Kong which I experienced first hand and recorded for posterity. I am working at IT Department, beside on-line surfing, photography is one of my hobby. Not until recently, "blog" allow me to share my point of view of Hong Kong Daily life with the traditional media limitations.

January: Death of Zhao Ziyang

China's purged Communist Party leader Zhao Ziyang passes away aged 85. Zhao's daughter Wang Yannan said Zhao died "peacefully", adding: "He is free at last."

February: Light Up The First Joss Sticks

At the the first day of Chinese New Year. Many Hong Kong people goto Wong Tai Sin Temple to light up their first joss sticks, which they believed to bring good luck for coming year.

Many Hong Kong people like me waiting for this moment for long long time.

What's a shame for him to use his health condition as excuse to step down, and appoint new post as Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference later.

April: Anti-Japan March

About 12,000 Hong Kong people marching from Victoria Park to the Central Government Offices, to protest against Japan approved a textbook that critics say glosses over the brutal Japanese occupation of China from 1931 to 1945, including the Nanjing massacre of 1937.

They also oppose Japan's bid to become a permanent member of the UN security council, as well as its occupation of the Diaoyu Islands.

May: Tin Hau Festival

Tin Hau also known as "Ma Jo" or "Leung Ma", who believe has ability to predict weather and save people from shipwreck.

During the Festival, freshman's group, sporting clubs and clansmen associations who worship Tin Hau will send "Piu Sik" and other performers to take part in Tin Hau Festival Parade at Yuen Long.

December: WTO

The Sixth WTO Ministerial Conference was held in Hong Kong, China, 13–18 December 2005

I am so naive to believe that WTO is good and play fair for all country before they host the meeting at Hong Kong. Even, Hong Kong Government also put on TV CM to HARD sell how good it is.

It' sound good, until I meet Korean Farmers. They use a lot of methods to tell us how bad and unfair for others country beside US and Europe Countries.

Beside, the anti-WTO messages, Hong Kong people learn there is more than one method to voice out their message, not just marching for Victorial Park to Central Government Office every year.

Every time I think of WTO, I just remember the slogan from Korean Farmer:

Down! Down! WTO!

The WTO took over Hong Kong for around a week. Roads around the Hong Kong Convention Centre were closed, including main highways. Businesses in the immediate area boarded up doors and windows, many closing for the duration.

WTO protesters clash with police. Behind the scenes however, Hong Kong Police showed restraint and understanding and protestors returned to clean up debris themselves which they had created earlier in the day.

Many people are confused about who and what the WTO actually is and does, and why it sparks such reactions every time it meets.

To help answer this the Memory Capsule did a bit of background research. Pascal Lamy, who is the fifth Director-General of the WTO kept an online conference diary/weblog. To quote from Mr Lamy:

"I believe that trade opening and reducing trade barriers, has been, is and will remain, essential to promote growth and development, to improve standards of living and to tackle poverty reduction. The World Trade Organization remains the most efficient and most legitimate forum to open and regulate world trade.

Delegates from the 49 poorest countries are gathering to meet with me. I know they are expecting to hear what I and the other Members will do about the issues they care about. They are keen to get access to rich countries’ markets for their products — free of barriers. Some of them remind me that they represent only a tiny fraction of world trade, less than 1%, they cannot be seen as a threat to anyone — do they have any chance? I see my task as ensuring that their voices are heard and their points taken into account."
