Thank you, Marie! The sky is result of trying out Photoshop Elements 7. Normally I'm using Gimp and Linux, but I heard so much positive statements about pse, that I had to try it. One thing is definitly easier which you see here: Adding a layermask for for the sky was very easy!

Although I am not a fan of too much digital manipulation, I have to agree this is a nice photo.

I think, the means to get a certain result is not the important thing. The result should express a certain feeling, mood or something like that. Sometimes you can reach this by a photo right out of the camera, sometimes you have to do little corrections in postprocessing, sometimes you have to do more. I give you one example to show what I mean: The moon. When you see the full moon in the sky, your impression makes it much bigger as it really is. No photo can show the impression, as long as I make the moon bigger, more dramatic.

The other thing is, that contrasts of digital cameras are low compared of those, our eyes can see. So I have to postprocess my photos to show, what I have seen.

But I agree fully in one point with you: Too much postprocessing can destroy everything!
